Kitchen electrics, sockets and lighting
A new kitchen is the hardest-working room in the house for your electrics: an induction hob, an oven, a dishwasher and a kettle all at once. Carl plans the circuits, puts sockets where you'll actually use them, and lights it properly.
Build your kitchen
Tap the appliances you're planning. They appear in the kitchen, the circuits you'll need build up on the fuse board, and fixed appliances get an isolation switch. Flip a switch to turn that appliance off.
Connected load isn't what you'll draw at once: nobody runs every appliance together. We calculate the real maximum demand and check your main fuse can take it.
Sockets where you need them
Most older kitchens have two double sockets and an extension lead doing the rest. Slide to see the difference a proper socket plan makes.
- A double socket roughly every metre of worktop
- USB-A and USB-C sockets by the breakfast bar and charging spot
- At least 300 mm from the sink, and never directly over the hob
- Pop-up or floor-box sockets for islands, so there are no trailing leads
- Isolation switches for built-in appliances, above the worktop or somewhere accessible inside a cupboard
- Sockets inside tall cupboards for a hidden charging station or coffee machine
What we install in kitchens
Cooker and hob circuits
Induction hobs and double ovens usually need their own 32 A circuit, and single ovens and built-in microwaves a 16 A circuit, each with its own isolation switch.
New and moved sockets
Extra doubles, USB-C, pop-up island sockets and sockets moved to suit your new layout.
Appliance supplies
Fused spurs and isolation switches for dishwashers, washers, fridges, boiling taps and wine coolers.
Lighting
Downlights, pendants over the island, under-cabinet and plinth strips, all on dimmable scenes.
Extraction
Power for cooker hoods and ceiling extractors, sized to meet Building Regulations Part F.
Certified and notified
New circuits are notified under Part P, with certificates ready for your records. See the kitchen project timeline.
