Victorian and Edwardian houses
Large rooms and old wiring. Rewires, new consumer units and lighting for high ceilings.
Big Victorian and Edwardian homes, a busy high street and the sea on two sides. Coastal properties need kit that lasts.

Hoylake sits on the north-west tip of the Wirral, with Hilbre on one side, the wind farms out to sea on the other, and the Royal Liverpool golf links in between. Its streets are full of large Victorian and Edwardian houses, many now being modernised, alongside the shops and restaurants of Market Street. Meols runs east along the coast with its own mix of interwar semis and big detached homes along Meols Drive.
The salt air is the big difference. Cheap outdoor sockets, lights and screws corrode within a few winters here, so we use sealed, marine-grade fittings and stainless fixings outside, and seal every cable entry properly.
About 11 miles by road from Carl's base in Spital, usually around 25 minutes in the van.

Urgent fault in Hoylake? What to do now, and how quickly Carl can usually come
What the houses here are like, and what they usually need.

Pick the kit, then drag the slider to see a few winters on the seafront. Tap any fitting to see what goes wrong and what lasts.
Slide forward a few winters to see the difference the right kit makes.
Ordinary kit by the sea: Cheap fittings let damp in round the glass and the salt pits the metal, so the light starts to flicker or trip the circuit within a few winters.
What Carl fits: IP65 or higher, marine-grade stainless or powder-coated aluminium, with a sealed gland where the cable enters.
Ordinary kit by the sea: Spring lids stop sealing, and salt bridges the contacts, so the RCD trips every time it rains.
What Carl fits: An IP66 socket with a lockable lid, mounted at a sensible height and RCD protected on its own circuit.
Ordinary kit by the sea: Rust runs from cheap brackets and screws, and the housing fogs inside.
What Carl fits: Cameras rated IP66 or IP67, a sealed junction box and stainless fixings.
Ordinary kit by the sea: The charger itself is fine outside, but poorly sealed cable entries let water in.
What Carl fits: A sealed charger, a properly glanded supply cable, and a position out of the worst spray if you have the choice.
Ordinary kit by the sea: Zinc-plated screws rust within months on the front, and the stains run down the wall.
What Carl fits: A4 (316) stainless fixings and brackets throughout.
Ordinary kit by the sea: Connections in the ground corrode and fail.
What Carl fits: IP68 connectors, sealed transformer housings and buried armoured cable.

Salt carried on the wind settles on fittings and gets into joints, and ordinary steel screws and cheap seals don't last. Carl uses fittings rated IP65 or higher, stainless steel fixings, sealed cable glands and boxes that drain properly.
Yes. Chargers are built for outdoor use, but near the coast it's worth choosing a well-sealed unit, mounting it out of the worst of the weather if you can, and sealing the cable entry carefully.
Yes, along with the promenade, Market Street and everything between Hoylake and Moreton.
Fixed some outdoor lighting and then sorted my elderly mum’s alarm system at really short notice. Responds quickly to messages and turns up when he says he will. Great jobs done at a very reasonable price. Would highly recommend.
