About the technical information on this site

The guides, figures and tools on this website explain how typical jobs are done. They're general guidance, not a design or a quote for your home.

General guidance only

Throughout the site you'll find details such as cable types and sizes, fuse and breaker ratings, RCD and RCBO protection, IP ratings, earthing, electrical loads, typical timescales, running costs and the regulations that apply. These are examples of what's usual, to help you understand the work and ask the right questions. They are not a specification, design or quotation for any particular property.

Every home is different

The right cable, protection, route and method for your job depend on things that can only be confirmed on site, including:

  • your existing wiring, fuse board and any earlier alterations
  • how your property is earthed (for example PME or TT) and the size of your supply
  • the distances involved, the cable route and how the building is constructed
  • what the circuit will power and how it will be used

Carl confirms all of this at a survey, and your written quote sets out exactly what will be installed. If anything on the website differs from your quote, the quote is what applies.

Regulations come first

All work is designed, installed, tested and certified to the current edition of BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) and the Building Regulations, including Part P. These take priority over anything shown on this website. Regulations and guidance are updated from time to time, so some details here may not reflect the very latest changes.

Calculators, prices and pictures

The calculators, planners and interactive tools are simplified illustrations. Any prices, savings, running costs or timescales shown are examples only and are not a quote. Drawings, animations and photos show typical installations and may not match your own.

Please don't do it yourself

This information is not instructions for carrying out electrical work. Electricity can kill, and much electrical work in a home must by law be done or checked by a registered electrician. If you're unsure about anything, ask Carl.

In an emergency: for a power cut call 105; if you smell gas call 0800 111 999.
